Finding Strength in His Grace: A Letter to Single Mothers by Jen DeBrot

Oh Friend,

If you’re reading this, chances are you’re juggling a million things at once. You’re a mother, a provider, a protector, a nurturer, and so much more. You’re a single mom. And sometimes, the weight of it all can feel crushing. The world tells you that you’re incomplete, that you’re lacking, that you’re somehow less than. But I’m here to tell you, with every fiber of my being, that you are seen, you are valued, and you are incredibly strong in the eyes of God.

I know the exhaustion that seeps into your bones after a long day of work, followed by homework help, dinner prep, and bedtime stories. I know the worry that gnaws at your heart when you’re not sure how you’re going to make ends meet. I know the loneliness that creeps in when everyone else seems to have a partner to share the load.

But let me remind you of something profound: you are not alone. You have a Father in Heaven who sees your struggles, hears your prayers, and loves you unconditionally. He is your strength when you feel weak, your comfort when you feel lost, and your guide when you don’t know which way to turn.

Isaiah 41:10 says: “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

Hold onto these words, dear friends. Cling to them when the different waves of life threaten to pull you under. God promises to be with you, to strengthen you, and to uphold you. He doesn’t promise an easy life, but He promises to never leave your side.

Being a Godly Woman for Your Children

Here are a few practical things that helped me model faith for my children when I was a single mother myself:

  1. Make Time for Prayer and Scripture: I know time is precious, but even 15 minutes a day can make a difference. Start your day with prayer, asking God for guidance and strength. Read a passage of scripture and meditate on its meaning. Let your children see you engaging with God’s Word.
  2. Be Honest About Your Struggles: Don’t try to pretend that you have it all together. Your children need to see that it’s okay to struggle, to make mistakes, and to rely on God for help. Share your challenges with them in an age-appropriate way, and let them see you turning to God for solutions.
  3. Practice Forgiveness: As a single mom, you may have experienced hurt and betrayal. But holding onto bitterness will only poison your heart and your children’s. Teach them the importance of forgiveness, both for others and for themselves. Show them how to extend grace, just as God extends grace to us.
  4. Model Integrity: Your children are watching your every move. Be a woman of your word. Be honest in your dealings. Stand up for what is right, even when it’s difficult. Show them what it means to live a life of integrity.
  5. Serve Others: Find ways to serve your community together. Volunteer at a local food bank, visit a nursing home, or simply help a neighbor in need. Serving others teaches your children compassion and empathy, and it reminds them that they are part of something bigger than themselves.
  6. Create a Home Filled with Love and Laughter: Despite the challenges, strive to create a home environment that is filled with love, laughter, and joy. Make time for fun activities, like game nights, movie nights, or picnics in the park. Let your children know that they are loved and cherished.
  7. Find a Supportive Community: Surround yourself with other believers who can offer encouragement, support, and accountability. Join a small group at your church, connect with other single moms online, or seek out a mentor who can guide you on your journey.

You Are Enough

Remember, dear sisters, you are enough. You are strong, you are capable, and you are loved. God has entrusted you with the precious gift of motherhood, and He will equip you to fulfill that calling.

Don’t let the world define you. Don’t let your past mistakes hold you back. Don’t let the challenges of single motherhood steal your joy. Instead, embrace your strength in Christ, navigate your journey with grace, and become the godly woman that God has called you to be.

ACTION STEP

This week, set aside 15 minutes each day for prayer and scripture reading. Use this time to connect with God, seek His guidance, and find strength in His Word. And then–can I encourage you to write down one thing you are grateful for each day to share with your children.

Learning How to Pray

Unstuck Ministries has now served over one million single mothers over the last two decades, and we have covered so much through the years in articles, podcasts, videos, eBooks, etc., including grief & trauma, parenting, forgiveness, bitterness, spiritual growth, money management, and so much more. We’ve covered ALL….THE….THINGS! But the topic we’re covering today is the catalyst to it all. Prayer. It is prayer that shifts things. It is prayer that promotes our intimacy with the Lord. It is through prayer that the Lord often teaches us. Sadly, too many Believers in Christ have a weak prayer life. How can you be in relationship with the Lord and not ever talk to Him? This must change. Many Believers often struggle in prayer, because they were

What To Do When Your Child Is Hurting by Jennifer Maggio

I was 14 years old when a dear friend’s father left her mother.  She was devastated.  The fighting had gone on for months. It had been tense at home, but she never imagined her parents would actually split.  We stayed up and cried together many nights in those first weeks and months.  We mourned the loss of the family that would never live in the same home again. We mourned what once was and what could now never be. I listened as she shared her pain and fears of what would eventually happen and how life would never be the same. Her pain became my pain.  I just wanted to help her heal, and mostly, I just felt helpless.   My mother died when I was

Take the Lead by Denise Adcock

I am an avid hiker and lover of the outdoors. When I’m not hiking, I spend my time biking, kayaking, or walking.  Being in God’s beautiful creation brings me joy!  As a single mom, I shared my love of nature with both of my children. All three of us had bikes, so several times a week we’d ride from our house to a nearby park and hit the trails.  When I look back on this today, those trail rides were some of the best experiences we had together as a single-parent family. It helped us let go of our burdens and refocus on what mattered most, our precious family.  Being a mom requires courage and leadership. John Maxwell says, “A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the
