Unstuck Ministries (formerly The Life of a Single Mom) has served more than 1 million single mothers over the last decade. Our primary goal is to connect single moms to a support group in a local church for encouragement, friendships, support, and discipleship. We’ve launched hundreds of support groups in churches throughout the U.S. In addition, we provide life skills education both online and in-person in 3 core areas: Parenting, Finances, and Health & Wellness, as well as life-changing events, such as single mom conferences, boot camps, and more. We believe that no single mom should walk alone.

Most of the single moms’ support groups we have helped start are led by current or former single moms. This is an excellent way for single moms to serve and mentor new single moms who may not be as far along in their journey. It also creates additional credibility, if the leader happens to be a single mom, or once was. (Note: We are often asked if the leader has to be a single mom. The answer is ‘no’. However, we do recommend, if not, that each ministry engage as many single mom volunteers as possible to ensure that single moms’ needs are addressed.)
While it is the primary mission of The Life of a Single Mom ® to establish single moms’ support groups, offer life skills education, and host life-changing events, we do offer some limited support throughout the year, when funding is available. (Note: Please DO NOT call to check status, as we get far more requests than funding is available. There are a number of resources on our website that are beneficial for both single moms and single dads, including our books, podcasts, videos, eBooks, articles, and newsletter. Further, some of our support groups on the national map are co-ed groups that are offered to both moms and dads. However, we believe it is very important to stay in the lane that you’ve been called to. For us, that is single moms, who are our primary focus.

Thank you for your heart to serve single mothers! The process is simple:
We often get the question: What About Single Dads? The Life of a Single Mom® recognizes single dads exist and have worked with hundreds of churches of varying sizes that launch both single moms’ and single dads’ groups. However, we want to stay in the lane we’ve been called to. The biggest need, based on demographic size, is single mother-led homes. Consequently, the overwhelming majority of our groups are single mothers. Ultimately, we leave the choice (single moms’, single dads’, or single parents’ ministry) to the discretion of each pastoral leadership team and are happy to work with you, regardless of what you decide. It is our official recommendation to create a single moms’ ministry first. Then, create a single dads’ ministry, using the same template. You can always facilitate joint activities for fellowship on a regular basis, e.g. quarterly cook-outs or single parent game nights. Creating an environment where single dads and single moms can have their own ministry fellowship removes some of the complexities of co-ed Bible studies. Again, there is no right or wrong answer here, so feel free to move forward with what works for your church. We’re happy to help.

We recognize that many single mothers are on a tight budget and don’t have extra funding for curriculum and training kit purchases. That’s why we recommend each host church make the investment into their single mothers. Most churches allocate a budget for curriculum for ministries within the church.
Unstuck Ministries believes that it is appropriate to always garner approval from those who are in authority at the local church, before starting a new ministry venture, even if the group is meeting in your home. This is respectful. Further, support from your leadership team can only yield benefits, such as prayer, protection, volunteer support, advertising, meeting space, and more. If you are starting a group in a local church (even if it meets in your home), we highly recommend getting pastoral approval before proceeding. (The same is true of an executive team for a nonprofit). We’ve written some tips on how to present to your leadership, as well as what to do if they say yes or no. You can check it out HERE.
First, thank you for your willingness to say yes! It all starts with the yes. Thank you for moving forward to see the needs of single mothers in your community and how you can be part of their journey to encourage and strengthen them. It is actually very common for new leaders to feel nervous about the launch of a new group. Don’t worry. Who God calls, He equips. And we’re here to help. Unstuck Ministries offers a wide array of training materials, including both online and print curriculum. We remove the guesswork, including sample discussion questions, opening ice breakers, sample prayers, and more! Most churches purchase our Single Mom Mega Ministry Kit for their leaders. It includes everything you need to know to start a group and improve an existing one, and it includes teaching material!
No. Most single moms’ groups, ministries, Sunday school classes, Bible studies, outreaches, or gatherings are simply an extension of your church, in that same way that youth groups, women’s’ ministry, or others are. There is no need to start a separate nonprofit. In fact, we recommend not starting a nonprofit, as it is expensive, time consuming, and often not necessary. Nonprofits require an entirely different set of skills and guidelines. It isn’t necessary to launch a nonprofit to effectively minister to single mothers in your church and community. Donations can easily be handled through your church’s existing infrastructure. (Note: We recognize each scenario is different and several factors could be considered. This response is not intended to give legal or business advice.)

However, we highly recommend becoming a Unstuck-Certified group, as our methods have proven to be the most effective infrastructure for churches on the market today. (Note: Please be advised that churches that are not certified may not use our name, likeness, or trademark.)
Beyond the implementation of the single moms’ support group, there is much discussion about the needs of their children. Many ministries we have found focus on one or the other – the single moms or the kids. The goal of effective ministry is to minister to the needs of the children and also the mothers.
