The Fierce Love of a Special Needs Single Mama by Brandi Davis

Motherhood changes you, every mom knows this. But being a special needs mama—especially a single one—this transforms you from the inside out. The days are filled with silent battles most never see: endless therapies, appointments, IEP meetings, insurance appeals, and the constant fight to secure care that never seems simple – but is essential.

It’s carrying a child who is far too heavy to be held, but still needs you like an infant. It’s wiping tears during meltdowns that don’t have easy fixes, whispering comfort when you feel like crying too.  It’s waiting on hold with insurance, filling out paperwork that sits on a stranger’s desk, and fighting systems that were never built with kids like yours in mind.

And as a single mama, that load feels even heavier. There’s no one to tag in when the meltdown stretches into its second hour. No one to cover the late-night ER run, or the job you have to miss when your child is sick again. You’re the caregiver, provider, advocate, teacher, nurse, and comforter all rolled into one. Some nights you collapse into bed wondering how you’ll possibly get up and do it again tomorrow.

But somehow—you do. Because perseverance, not perfection, is what keeps us going.

Naming the Hard

Let’s be real: this journey is tough. There’s grief where milestones should be happening, guilt when exhaustion makes you short-tempered, and fear for the future you can’t always see. I’ve sat in my car after school drop-off with tears streaming, wondering if I was failing my child. I’ve battled guilt when my other kids needed me, and I couldn’t be in two places at once.

But acknowledging those feelings doesn’t make us weak. It makes us honest. Strength isn’t pretending everything is fine—it’s showing up anyway, even with shaking hands and a heavy heart, and trusting that God will bring you through it.

Building a Village

Even as single mamas, we aren’t meant to do this alone. Community may not look the way we imagined, but it matters. For me, it was a neighbor who watched the kids so I could buy groceries in peace, a church friend who listened without judgment, and an online group of parents who understood my daughter’s rare diagnosis.

Sometimes friends drift away because they don’t understand the world we live in. That hurts. But there are people who will hold space for your struggles and celebrate your victories, even if they don’t live under your roof. Find them. Reach out. Even one person who “gets it” can lift the weight of loneliness.

The Quiet Heartbreaks and Small Victories

Being a special needs plus single mama often means carrying heartbreaks most never notice. It’s the sting of stares in public, the silent prayers when your child struggles with something other kids breeze through, the ache of watching expectations you once had quietly fade. It’s the exhaustion of trying to do the inner work to heal while still being very present for your children.

But this road is also full of joy that takes your breath away. A new word spoken after months of silence. A meltdown avoided by a routine you worked hard to build. A first step doctors said might never come. Watching them sleep peacefully after years of no sleep at all. The sound of laughter after the hardest day – this is my favorite.

As single mamas, these moments are ours alone to witness. The outside world may miss them, but to us, they are monumental. These small wins are the fuel that keep us moving from overwhelm to overflow.

Advocacy and Resilience

Being your child’s voice is not optional—it’s survival. I’ve hounded therapists, sat through meetings where I refused to stay silent, and fought school districts who underestimated my daughter. Every win felt enormous; every loss left me drained.

But here’s what I’ve learned: our voices matter. You don’t need permission to speak up for your child. Stop apologizing for their needs. Fight for their dignity in every room you walk into. And remember—resilience isn’t about never getting tired. It’s about choosing to rise again, fueled by love that refuses to quit.

Becoming Someone New

No one tells you how much this journey will transform you. You become stronger than you thought possible, more patient than you ever wanted to be, and more resourceful than you believed you could be.

You learn to adapt when plans change—because they always do. You learn to stretch your hope, your energy, and your finances farther than you thought possible. And in the process, you realize you’re becoming someone new—braver, tougher, more compassionate. Someone who knows how to keep going even when quitting feels easier.

The Exhaustion and the Beauty

Some days will be hard. Some days will bring joy. Most days will hold both. That’s the paradox of this life—the exhaustion and the beauty living side by side.

People sometimes offer pity, but pity isn’t what we need. What we long for is understanding. To be seen. For the world to recognize that behind every child with special needs is a mama carrying more than most can imagine.

And for single mamas, that reality is magnified. The weight is heavier. The nights are longer. The responsibilities pile higher. But so does the grit. So does the courage. So does the love.

Romans 5:3-5 is my go-to reminder from the Bible: “We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance. And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because he has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.”

Love That Doesn't Let Go

At the end of the day, being a special needs single mama isn’t just about survival—it’s about perseverance. It’s about showing up again and again with a love that is fierce, unwavering, and relentless.

It’s about carrying your child not only in your arms, but in your heart. It’s about celebrating victories the world might overlook but that feel monumental to you. It’s about believing in your child when others don’t. It’s about holding on when life feels unrelenting.

Yes, the load is heavy. But the love that carries it? Stronger still. 1 Corinthians 13:7 (NLT):

“Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.”

Because this kind of love—the kind that refuses to quit—is what makes a special-needs single mama not just a survivor, but a warrior.

Serving Others Even When You Don’t Feel Like It

Servanthood is widely recognized as an effective way to shift focus from oneself to others, even during times of extreme personal difficulty, such as loss, divorce, trauma, abandonment, or others. In fact, even in secular counseling and cultural norms, many will agree that volunteerism is a common way to stabilize during a mental health crisis or seasons of overwhelm. If that is so, how much more should a Christian want to serve others? Why do you think service above self improves one’s mental health?   Here’s why. Our Savior taught it. The very Creator of Heaven and Earth sent His Son to serve others, and He modeled it. In other words, you were created to serve. It is our purpose on the earth. First, we serve our Savior through worship and praise. Then,

The Holy Assignment of Motherhood by Jennifer Maggio

My mother was killed when I was only 17 months old, leaving me spending years yearning for a mother I never knew.  There were dance recitals and basketball games and proms and a wedding day that I often wondered how she’d react or what encouraging words she may have had for me. When I became a single mother at only 17 years old, I felt certain that I was doomed to fail my own motherhood story. I had never really had a mother and was far too young to begin that journey – especially alone. In reflection, my three children are all now grown, and I’ve successfully sojourned my parenting years, albeit with some long and hard seasons in between!  I’ve lived to tell about it. I’ve lived through the good days of squeezes and cuddles and
