Things You Should Never Say to a Single Mom

Things You Should Never Say to a Single Mom

Being a single mom can be a tough journey. Multiple jobs, endless cleaning, carpooling, balancing budgets, parenting decisions made alone, and little help from others can lead to exhaustion and frustration, to say the least. So the team thought you single moms out there could use  a little laugh. We love you and pray you have an amazing day!

Friends, the following are just a few light-hearted (yet true) things you should never say to a single mom. (Single Moms, we hope we make you smile with at least a few of these!):

1. Will you babysit my kids?

2. Hello, May I speak to the man of the house?

3. I totally understand. Sometimes I feel like a single mom, too, when my husband's away.

4. Little Johnny needs $25 for a school field trip before Friday.

5. Is it harder to find a date now that you have kids?

6. Did you hear Sally's man left her, too?

7. You look tired. Is something wrong?

8. Mom, I signed you up to bake cupcakes for my class. I told my teacher you didn't mind.

9. I don't know how you do it, as a single mom. I'm exhausted and I'm married!

10.  I signed you up to help. I told them you never have anything to do on a Friday night, anyway.

Okay, yes, these things are meant to be light-hearted and slightly funny, but the truth is, single moms are often burning the candle at both ends, as they balance car pool, homework, a job (sometimes two), and the endless demands on her schedule. Let's edify, encourage, exhort, and equip her with some words of encouragement instead. Here are a few ideas:

> Can I babysit your kids, so you can take some time to rest?
> You are doing a great job.
> Your kids are so well-behaved.
> I appreciate how hard you work.
> You are a mighty woman of God, and I can see the light of Jesus in you.
> Here's $25. Grab yourself some lunch on me.
> I signed you up to bring the paper plates instead of baking something for the class party. I know how busy you are!
> I'd like to volunteer to clean your house as a small way to bless you. Would that be okay?
> Would you like to come over for coffee? I'd love to get to know you better.
> The joy on your face is so beautiful. God has truly given you beauty for ashes.

Learning How to Pray

Unstuck Ministries has now served over one million single mothers over the last two decades, and we have covered so much through the years in articles, podcasts, videos, eBooks, etc., including grief & trauma, parenting, forgiveness, bitterness, spiritual growth, money management, and so much more. We’ve covered ALL….THE….THINGS! But the topic we’re covering today is the catalyst to it all. Prayer. It is prayer that shifts things. It is prayer that promotes our intimacy with the Lord. It is through prayer that the Lord often teaches us. Sadly, too many Believers in Christ have a weak prayer life. How can you be in relationship with the Lord and not ever talk to Him? This must change. Many Believers often struggle in prayer, because they were

What To Do When Your Child Is Hurting by Jennifer Maggio

I was 14 years old when a dear friend’s father left her mother.  She was devastated.  The fighting had gone on for months. It had been tense at home, but she never imagined her parents would actually split.  We stayed up and cried together many nights in those first weeks and months.  We mourned the loss of the family that would never live in the same home again. We mourned what once was and what could now never be. I listened as she shared her pain and fears of what would eventually happen and how life would never be the same. Her pain became my pain.  I just wanted to help her heal, and mostly, I just felt helpless.   My mother died when I was

Take the Lead by Denise Adcock

I am an avid hiker and lover of the outdoors. When I’m not hiking, I spend my time biking, kayaking, or walking.  Being in God’s beautiful creation brings me joy!  As a single mom, I shared my love of nature with both of my children. All three of us had bikes, so several times a week we’d ride from our house to a nearby park and hit the trails.  When I look back on this today, those trail rides were some of the best experiences we had together as a single-parent family. It helped us let go of our burdens and refocus on what mattered most, our precious family.  Being a mom requires courage and leadership. John Maxwell says, “A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the
